Mango and raspberry yogurt with musli and seeds! Happy Breakfast
Some healthy food inspo for today!
Breakfast – Oatmeal with a small spoon of honey + apple and cinnamon. Top with some pecan nuts. Very easy to prepare and keeps you alert for quite some time.
Lunch – Salad with whatever you find available in the fridge and cupboard
I like to add cashew nuts, dried cranberries, avocado, beets and sweet potato cubes.
Drizzle some lemon olive oil on top and sprinkle some sea salt to add flavor.
I’ve done something I never thought I’d even consider doing before. I’ve cut my coffee addiction in a million pieces.
I honestly used to look with suspicious eyes on people who don’t drink coffee. How can you possibly wake up in the morning and not think of coffee? How can you have a meal not followed by coffee? How do you survive the afternoon without a caffeine kick?
Parallel thoughts and questions used to appear though. Why am I always feeling like my brain is on sleep-mode? Why is my skin always so damn dry? Why do I get so easily anxious and jittery? Why do I often wake up tired after 8 hours of decent sleep? Why do I lack motivation when I really need it?
Never once did I blame the coffee for these issues. You simply assume that there is a natural reason for these somewhat small daily struggles, such as lack of vitamins, hydration or maybe it’s because I’m not eating the right foods etc
Only when someone mentioned that a hormone or thyroid imbalance could cause these symptoms did I read up about the effects of coffee, because it’s pretty much the first thing that appears when you google above problems. That’s when I saw a link and I decided to cut coffee from 3-4 a day to 0-1 a day.
The first few days were bad, I won’t lie. You can choose to go easy and cut down bit by bit or you can decide to quit cold turkey. Withdrawal symptoms are not fun, trust me, and they are very real. I suddenly found myself knocked out on the sofa at 3pm, beyond tired, major headaches and a really shi**y mood. After the first week however, everything felt so much better. It’s now been over a month and I’m still amazed by the fact that I’m feeling awake, I’m alert, the fog has left my brain and I sleep better which means I wake up less tired. The afternoons are also fine, my skin is better and my mood is more stable. And no, I don’t miss it. I do take a small cup around 10ish, just out of habit, but never in the afternoon and I never exceed more than one. The thing is, if you do stop and you do experience the withdrawal symptoms, it means that you are addicted. It means that you are depending on a substance to keep you going through the day. Even if that doesn’t bother you, it’s a good thing to try out, if only to challenge yourself. I promise, if you can just get past that first tough week, you will without a doubt notice a positive over-all change!

So yesterday we had a Netflix and wine kind of evening, and a little too late my driving instructor texted me asking if I could do an extra lesson today, as I really need the final ‘touches’ before doing the test…I said yes and now I kind of wish I didn’t. Not because of the wine but it’s Friday and I had some other plans as well. It’s funny how the mind works tho…I really really want to get this whole thing over and done with, it’s been like a year of practising on and off (my instructor has days where he just don’t ‘go to work‘, which means I sometimes have weeks of not driving) but as much as I want it, every lesson is accompanied with a dose of anxiety.
On another note, today I’m applying for a course in interior & design. Will keep you posted, I’m sure it’ll be fun, I always wanted to do something ‘real’ with my creativity, but never really found the right thing. Malta is sometimes a little limited, so fingers crossed about this one!
My morning detox juice, doesn’t it look so tempting! Love it – carrot, apples and lots of ginger!
Try to mix and match from these different options, one day this and one day that, so that it doesn’t become boring and you end up going back to the sugary cereals or a quick cheesy toast.
Choosing a healthy portion by mixing for example greek yogurt with mixed seeds and some banana slices, or a slice of salmon on a wholemeal bread will keep you on the right track for the rest of the day. Ok sure, eating a nice croissant in the morning with your coffee will probably come off during the day if you move around, but it sort of sets the tone for the entire day and I know, personally, that I feel slightly guilty on days when that happens. So, I try to be good and actually I tend to continue on the same healthy track when I start with a better breakfast.
This will give you a good mix of proteins, carbs and good fat.
Slice of salmon, almonds, eggs, greek yogurt, banana, fresh berries, oats/porridge, slice of wholemeal bread, avocado, mixed seeds (sunflower, pumpkin etc), coconut butter, grapefruit.
Whenever you have some extra time in the morning, maybe during the weekends, try a smoothie with berries, fruit, small amount of oats and add some almond milk.
I know that salmon sounds a bit much for breakfast but since I really love smoked salmon it’s really no big deal, and more than anything; it’s the best thing you can do for your hair and skin, especially together with avocado. It’s loaded with omega-3 fatty acids vitamin B-12 and iron which support scalp health and keeps it nice and shiny.
Take a look at this article about antioxidants to get a better understanding of why they are beneficial to our health, but also a reminder that there are two sides to every story. This is the story of antioxidants and those free radicals.
Today I did a voice-over job for Malta 5D in the morning and afterwards I met J for lunch at HIM. A perfect little place, Italian of course, with great food (breakfast/lunch) and the sound of the most beautiful language there is….
It’s actually all you need; the beautiful and stylish interior, Italian food and language (and music, don’t forget) + a glass of wine. That’s it. #happymode
About getting back in shape. Not happy right now.
Maybe Terminator-me can be my motivation
It’s been very hectic since a couple of months back, so my constant search for holistic wellbeing has taken a different route than I had planned…like it has a life on it’s own and prefers to travel uphill instead of straight forward at this time of the year. Anyway, I’m good though. My renewed new years resolution was to look after myself, something that comes naturally but needs a little push once in a while – I’ve done a breast scan, a smear test, booked my monthly facial plus another beauty related appointment, cut my hair shorter , stocked up on vitamins and, finally, signed up for driving lessons. Yay! I’m also taking a 6 week spiritual awareness class and next month I’m doing the walkathon
But don’t worry, I drink wine and eat unhealthy stuff in between, I wasn’t talking about wonder woman who does everything ‘super’, I’m not like that – it’s about the holistic approach, balance is the only correct word. You take care of yourself by exercising, eating good food, stick to a good skincare routine etc etc but in between you need your fix. Nothing is worth all that healthy stuff if you don’t get your fix. For me that’s things like coffee, wine, something sweet, a full day in PJ’s or custard croissants 😉
Holland & Barrett opened a new outlet in Sliema which is great!
